Best Practices in Math: Daily Routines

This will most likely become a series of posts. But I wanted to explore what best practices looked like in a math class. Now I will be focusing on more of the k-5th best practices for examples, but the flow remains the same no matter what grade you teach.

Daily Routines

The first thing you want to have is daily routines. This is where your students know what to expect when they enter the classroom. It sets the mood for the classroom and gets them into the mind set of learning. I have a phrase in my classroom. “Get your mind right.” I always want them to be ready to go.

So what are some daily routines in math?

Number fluency:

Number strings: a great website for number strings is numberstrings.com

Number of the day: There are a multiple of ways of accomplishing this but it really is a great way to get elementary students thinking about numbers and the different ways they can be represented.

Number Talk: Unlike Number of the Day, Number Talks promote mental math strategies and therefore students do not record individual responses. If you want to watch this in action check out this video.

Those routines develop number fluency and can be very effictive in enhancing the learning of students. What I like about it, is that it helps students problem solve with numbers. To see numbers differnt ways. I find myself using this type of strategies all the time when working with students. What becomes frustrating when I work with 6th grade students is that they lack these skills.

Problem Solving:

Data driven warm up: This is more down my alley the closer we get to STAAR testing and or district snap shots. I am actually thinking through the correct way to format and working on a new resource that covers all the 5th grade TEKS and helps to spiral what was taught before and move into discovering misconceptions in TEKS that were already taught.

Problem of the day: This is something I loved doing. It almost becomes a competition among students. I usually picked problems that made students think. I would see students race to the smart board right at the beginning of class and begin trying to figure out the problem. I even had students begin showing up early so they could beat others in the classroom and have bragging rights for the rest of the day.
